Hardboiled & Hard Luck by Banana Yoshimoto

4.25

First book of 2023 and my second Yoshimoto book and it didn't disappoint. I haven't read  many of enough books dealing with grief, death and everything that comes with it but Yoshimoto's books are the standard for me now.
Both "kitchen" and "hardboiled and hard luck" revolve around women who're dealing with grief and trying to make peace with the loss. Though these subjects are sensitive and quite difficult to deal with and often end up making you feel overwhelmed, but it's not the case with these two books. The stories are saddening yet gentle and comforting.

Japanese fiction is indeed unsettling at times and Yoshimoto's work is no different but that's the beauty of it, i guess. Unsettling yet beautiful.

Also, the translation was bit off at times i guess because it took me some time to figure out what the sentences actually meant. Or is it just my brain?
