This book was terrifying and heartbreaking and painful to read (in a good way). I once woken up three times in one night from the nightmares this book gave me.
I want to start off by addressing what a lot of reviewers have called a love triangle. I have pretty much a no tolerance policy for geometric shapes of love, but the problem with Crimson Bound is that it’s difficult to explain the romance. Yes there are two love interests in this book, but if you read it you may understand why I don’t count the romance as being a love triangle. Also, this so called “love triangle” didn’t bother me in the slightest.
I loved the protagonist, Rachelle. She was brave, and determined, and broken, and human, even though she wasn’t actually human. There was one part 100 pages from the end that nearly split my heart in two, when all I could do was repeatedly scream “why”.
Although this is said to be a Little Red Riding Hood retelling, the classic fairy tale is barely noticeable. Crimson Bound is also certainly darker than Cruel Beauty (Hodge's first book), all while keeping Hodge’s beautiful writing style and fantastic world building. Crimson Bound had my heart pounding almost constantly.
Overall, this book gave me nightmares, broke my heart and made me fall in love with its world and characters and has earned 5 stars for it.
