Eventide by Kent Haruf

5.0

I think I liked this even more than Plainsong. It continues on maybe a year or so after Plainsong and carries on with some of the characters from Plainsong, but introduces some new ones too.

I still really like Haruf's style of writing. He just presents you with the facts and it's up to you how you feel about them. Even the characters are just presented as is. There's no inner monologues or explanations for why they're the way they are, it's up to the reader to interpret them in their own way, but they're still very strong characters in spite of that. I imagine most readers would come away with a completely different experience of each book and the characters.

While reading both Plainsong and Eventide I couldn't help picturing it as a TV show. It almost plays out that way, each chapter a different scene. Usually when I read a book, if I'm enjoying it, I'll try and picture it in my head as a film or on TV, but this book just naturally does that itself. I didn't even have to try. That might mean absolutely nothing to anybody else, but in my special little brain I think it's the sign of a really good book.
