This is a tale made that much more haunting by the current state of Palestine and Israel. Although it is partially fiction, the first half of the story is based on true events that happened in August 1949. In it, a group of Israeli solders kill a group of Bedouin Palestinians and capture a young girl. They rape and kill her, leaving her in a shallow grave to remain in hopes of being forgotten. Continuing to what truly happened in real life, this atrocious act is uncovered and reported in the newspaper years later, which leaves a impact on a young Palestinian woman. Obsessed with the connection she has with the girl from the tragedy, the woman embarks on a trip to retrace the steps of the of girl from the newspaper. Deeply moving and thought-provoking, this was a incredible read I'm still unraveling now as I write this.
If you don't mind feeling uncomfortable and unsettled by the dark side of humanity, I highly recommend if you wish to gain more perspective on what's going on in our world right now.
