How to Keep House While Drowning: A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing by KC Davis

hopeful inspiring reflective medium-paced

3.0

I think the world needs more of this type of book. I genuinely think this could help people, I just think I'm not one of those people right now. I don't really have shame about how my house looks, but I still have trouble managing it. A lot more of this book is focused on addressing the former rather than the latter of these issues. Davis also writes advice from the perspective of a new mother, which is not always super applicable to my living situation, although she does have a page about how everyone can struggle with housework even without kids, which was nice.

Tonally this reads like a collection of blog posts, which renders it a bit disjointed and repetitive. I wish things were organized a bit better. A lot of the "optional" chapters were the ones where I found the most useful advice, and I find it strange they were the ones the author considered least important. I think there were also more personal anecdotes than I would have preferred, although I'm sure others would see the value in these. For example, the page about how how to clean your car is simply an admission from the author that they don't actually know how to keep it clean. This may be reassuringly relatable, but it's not helpful for people seeking actionable advice.
