Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali

3.0

Okay, I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about the plot, and I think that helped me enjoy the story a BIT more than I would've otherwise.

I don't want to say that I didn't enjoy this novella, but it left me wanting something more. I like that it involved an embedded narrative, but I sometimes felt it dragged. The middle section was hard to get through, but the ending, specifically once Raif had returned home, redeemed it a bit.

The female characters leave something to be desired, as they act as devices in Raif's character development. Be it his family in Turkey, Maria, or his daughter, the female characters lack depth, even when they are painted to be complex characters.

There is so much longing and angst that is incredibly raw, but at times, it is tiresome and almost juvenile. While Raif's commitment to Maria is beautiful, it is also selfish.

Wonderful language, well written, and deep--yet chauvinistic at times, and features a narrator who I find hard to get along with.
