- UPDATE AFTER RESEARCHING -
- now i know this was based on the authors own experiences, i appreciate it more. it read like nonfiction and had me wondering where the actual plot structure and shit came from and if she took it from someone or it was given to her, but it makes sense its her own experience. i hope writing this was therapeutic for her and please do not bother the author about it; the publisher added the note in the beginning specifically to protect the author -
very surprisingly well crafted novel especially given the subject matter . definitely one that was hard to read but harder to put down, as cliche as it is to say. not a huge fan of the main characters but also vanessa is a super well developed main character, and i suspect an unreliable narrator in the modern day sections of the book/later years of the past chapters. tough read for a survivor but the denial and self blame that happens before heavy healing lifting happens rings very true
one of the rare books that 80% through i wished it was only halfway over as it was that well written and crafted, however as this was not a fun read im glad its not actually 600 pages lol . in all honesty it deserves 5 stars for that alone but it didnt connect and resonate on a super deep and absolute level which is how i usually designate 5 star reads
also kind of makes me ponder again about the double standards of gender in writing . if a man wrote this he would be under fire, unless perhaps the main character was a boy/young man
