It
by Stephen King
Unforgettable reading experience, massive in scope, heavy with atmosphere, and pulsing with dread. Stephen King’s mastery of building tension is on full display here, as he blends coming-of-age drama with moments of pure horror. The book’s sense of unease lingers constantly, creating an undercurrent of discomfort, anxiousness, and that creeping feeling that something terrible is always just around the corner.
It’s worth acknowledging that some readers may not finish this one, not just because of its size, but because of certain content and themes that can be disturbing. While those moments are integral to King’s vision of fear and childhood trauma, they can be challenging to get through.
For me, the most surprising part was how different it felt from the movie adaptations. Even knowing the general premise, the novel still had plenty of unexpected turns and deeper character beats that kept me hooked. This is also my longest book to date, and for the most part, it flew by, though I’ll admit there were a few slower sections where the momentum sagged.
Still, IT delivers a layered, tense, and deeply unsettling story that’s as much about the horrors we carry inside as it is about the monster lurking in the sewers. A challenging but rewarding read that earns its place among King’s most iconic works.
