His at Night
by Sherry Thomas
A+
As always Sherry Thomas does not disappoint!
Lord Vere is an agent of the Crown, helping solve cases by pretending to be a kind-hearted idiot. It's the ultimate Long Game, with the Marquess acting in his alter-ego 24/7 for the past 13 years. Everyone except his fellow agents believes a head injury after a fall from a horse has completely altered his personality.
He's on a case when he meets the woman of his dreams but has to act like a complete moron around her. Ellisande is a captive in her uncle's home. She and her feeble aunt are prisoners, despite society believing her uncle is a kind and generous man. Vere is investigating the uncle, gaining access to his estate where he's left his wife and niece to go on a business trip.
Ellisande is desperate to escape and save her aunt from further abuse. She tricks Vere into a compromising position which forces their hasty marriage, despite her deep dismay over his seriously annoying episodes of stupidity.
Eventually they figure out that they are both acting certain parts, but in the meanwhile the menacing uncle causes much distress to all concerned.
This book contains mildly descriptive love scenes.
