The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5.0

I cared about the characters on page one and never lost them on their journeys. I appreciated that the woman is looking back on her life, but you never know which sister it is until the very end. Only that she couldn’t believe what she’d done. That made me think “is that the worst thing” every time the plot for either sister moved forward, and “is that something I couldn’t forgive myself for”. The pacing was excellent, the plot includes love stories, parent/child stories, sibling stories, and hero stories. Incredible how much was packed into such a rich read. Seems like there are so many female protagonist books these days, and plenty of them set in WW II, but this is by far the best I’ve read so far.

Read for book riot’s 2020 read harder challenge #16 - Read a doorstopper (over 500 pages) published after 1950, written by a woman.
