Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey

4.0

I went into this book with my expectations greatly tempered. While I liked the first book's ideas, world building and concepts, the characters were really flat. I simply didn't care one whit about them.
When I started reading the sequel, there was a review that said this is a problem here as well and that that the person in question is dropping the series because of this.

But I ended up pleasantly surprised. Yes, it still isn't perfect, and the author has a penchant for telling rather than showing; but I haven't been bothered as much as in the first book. Subjectively, it felt better in the latter half, though I don't know whether it's because the prose got better, or because I got dragged into the story.

So all in all, not perfect, but not that bad. Will read the third part as well.
