This book was a meandering yet interesting look into the coming of age story not only of a young girl, but a family, in semi-remote Ireland. The author sketches an interesting arc with several motifs throughout. I particularly liked Billy and the exploration of mother-daughter relationships in this book. What was less great was the use of tragedy (to a certain extent) as a plot device and some storylines or characters felt unnecessary or underdeveloped (Griff & James). All in all it is pretty good for a debut novel and I’m curious to see what Nealon does with some more practice.
