The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
4.0

I guess I liked this book? Honestly I'm not sure if this is a 3.5 or a 4 star book for me, and I may change the rating. I loved Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda, and that's why I picked out this one to read. I did read this as an audiobook, and I don't always like the format of audiobooks, so that could have colored my experience.

The goods: I felt like there were a few kinds of positive diversity represented here. The MC is part of a bi-racial family, and there's diversity of body sizes and sexuality. The MC is Jewish, and so is her crush.

Sisters tryna stick it out even after rocky times.

Cameo appearance by our dude Simon.

The grandma is real grandma material.

The not-so-goods: Where was the unrequited? Like, at what moment in the text was there actually anything unrequited? Was that referring to her previous crushes? Which we have no way of know the unrequitedness of? At no point in the book did she actually like someone who did not like her back. Next.

I enjoyed about the first 5 1/2 hours of listening to this, and after that, I felt like her thoughts got very repetitive.

Also, this is all audiobook, but the voices. One of my pet peeves is listening to men try to do girl's voices because they make us sound dumb, but I thought the woman narrator of this book made the girls sound kind of flakey and insubstantial and the boys sound really dumb.
