This book is nothing short of a trip. A really f*cking long drawn out trip! This review contains many spoilers but still doesn’t come close to explaining the plot.
I can’t stress enough that you should pay attention to the author note and trigger warnings before you proceed. You’re thrown almost straight into one of the main themes of this book (SA) and it’s mentioned in multiple scenarios throughout. It was worrying how much the author seemed to use it to further her plot. Not only did it happen to multiple characters but also the need to convince the FMC she had been SA’d not once but twice on top of the multiple encounters she had that put her in the situation where it could happen if she wasn’t “saved” was really unnerving.
The first part of the book was interesting with spooky vibes that I won’t lie intrigued me because you don’t really know what’s going on or what will happen next. However the sheer length of this book just allowed for massive sections of over explaining and info dumping. The internal dialogue of the FMC is at times maddening. I found myself rolling my eyes and struggling not to DNF as she went on another 30 page dramatic monologue. She also has ZERO survival skills and can’t take simple directions or recognise any form of gaslighting and trust me there is A LOT of gaslighting!
Did anyone else suddenly realise the absence of ghosts? Like all the family go on about ghosts however pretty much every interaction she had is explained away as Amon and no other ghost ever appeared? She also mentioned Caleb to The Hale’s on multiple occasions and no one thought to ask any follow up questions? What?
It was also really convenient that the FMC didn’t connect dots until prompted by another character. She’s meant to be gaining all this knowledge of her past selves yet didn’t think to use the spell word Fiona used to translate the codex at any point? Instead we got multiple “I can’t speak Latin” reminders?? Don’t even get me started on the “food baby” epilogue. Girl that man should not know your body better than you mate or not.
Now to address the big red bleeding elephant in the room. I’m not one to yuck other people’s yums but certain scenes in this book made me audibly gag 🤢 You do you but there really was no need for the over explanation of that first scene. I can excuse most things in smut but the sheer amount of graphic detail in that first scene was grim. It was also her first ever sexual interaction (As Darcy) and she’d been raised by nuns? Girl what? You were too shy to allow him to kiss you on the cheek a minute ago.
Also the “need” to sleep with him to get over their dead child was fucking weird!
The pet names are too much and when he suddenly started calling her “Lass” Amon morphed into an old Yorkshire man. I understand the idea of insta love and fated mates (this is not my first rodeo) but Amon just gave me the absolute ick.
The ending to the book is extremely rushed. Over 800 pages of build up to a final battle that was concluded in record time with barely a scratch and a bit of he said she said 😒
I’m 2⭐️ing for the simple fact that I finished it and parts of the story were genuinely unique (not always a good thing 🤢) but would I read it again or recommend it? No.
