Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon
3.0
I’ve been rereading each novel prior to that season of the tv show. I’ve forgotten how tedious I found this one. When I read it the first time, I got stuck in the middle and put it down for a solid year. I don’t really love this one. Jamie becomes an insufferable a-hole for a large portion of the book, the Brianna and Roger stuff falls too close to the romance novel for my tastes here. It’s also got a lot more of the coinky-dinky and manufactured drama than the earlier books.
I thought about this review overnight and here’s what it boils down to. Pretty much the FIRST conversation Claire has with Jamie about Roger (in the LAST book) should have gone something like this...
C: So, Bree has this sort of kind of maybe boyfriend. He was instrumental in my finding my way back to you.
J: Aye, go on...
C: OMG you will never guess the single biggest fact about him that would make him 100% relevant to you. No exaggeration!
Thus, in one clearly relevant sentence in book four, saving us from 800 pages of “Big Misunderstanding” bs. That’s my beef with this book in a nutshell. It’s completely implausible that Jamie wouldn’t already know Roger is a Mackenzie.
