I have zero interest in chess. How did this make me so engrossed with the chess world?! Overall I liked this book. The story was charming and it was a refreshing romance read with nice touches of humour. I appreciate reading about a woman in a chess world of men.

I felt like such an old fart reading about an 18 year old, but mostly because of some of the stupid decisions she made. It's tiring reading about unnecessary, excessive drama. I wish everyone was aged up.

I also didn't like the third act, but it kinda picked itself back up, fooorrrr theeeee moooost partttt

Also, her little sisters were COMPLETELY UNBEARABLE. Thankfully they weren't quite in there long enough to make me throw hands, but one point they made me wanna THROW HANDS. Thankfully I managed to push past it, and it was worth it.

Lots of pop culture references but I personally didn't find it annoying (mostly)

That dude cheating was too obvious and the foreshadowing was too heavy handed. At least he disappeared completely after that.

I hated how immature she was, just to have this conflict between them in the third act

Her blaming herself for her father's death was tiresome.

Her hiding her return to chess from her mother. Sigh.

Her throwing it all away to want to go back to fixing cars. Sigh.

Her insulting Nolan and his family. Sigh

At least the point where Mallory completely lost her shit and screamed at her shitty sisters and called them bitches was GLORIOUS

Her mom was like Mallory's saviour and knocked sense into her in the third act. Where was the her wisdom from the beginning? She let her 18 year old daughter decide to not go to college, and work to take care of her and her youngest daughters. WTF?
