My cat parenting attachment style appears to be ‘anxious but very sexy.’
—Dylan, SVRCP (Sexy and Very Responsible Cat Parent)

I only made it 3% into the book when I realized it takes place in the same fictional universe as [b: Sleeper by Kayley Loring]—which I ended up DNF-ing. This created some doubts about whether I’d be able to enjoy this book, since it was the author’s storytelling style that I had previously struggled with. But Attachment Theory had something going for it that Sleeper didn’t…Dylan Brodie. Dylan had managed to steal my heart before the end of the prologue, and it was for this cinnamon-roll alone that I stuck around until the last page.

What I Liked:

DYLAN. BRODIE. This sweet, vulnerable, adorable man deserves the world.

”Maybe kittens and therapists should stop being so fucking cute if they don’t want me to adore them so much.”

Well Mr. Brodie, maybe you should stop being so f*cking cute if you don’t want me to adore you so much.

➵ I’m not usually a fan of group texts, but I wouldn’t mind if the Brodie family added me to theirs!

DYLAN: I think I’m falling for my new therapist.
OWEN: Widening my eyes in surprise…
DYLAN: It’s not what you think.
OWEN: Nodding my head thoughtfully…
DYLAN: It’s not like with my co-stars. And it’s not transference.
OWEN: Shaking my head in agreement…
DYLAN: Okay, you know what? I thought you were the only person I could talk to about this, but you’re no better than Miles. This is exactly why I like her—she actually listens to me.
MILES: Because you’re paying her to—she’s your therapist.
DYLAN: Shit. I thought this was the one with just Owen and me.
MILES: No, it’s the one with the brother who got you twelve names of male therapists because he knew this would happen.
OWEN: To be fair, I also knew this would happen. But I was trying to be optimistic.
MILES: Fuck optimism. He’s 27. He’s already fallen for more than enough unavailable women in one lifetime.
MILES: What—no defensive response?
MILES: You switched to the other group text, didn’t you?

➵ Both of the MC’s families. Their dynamics were hilarious and endearing.

What I Disliked:

➵ Unfortunately I had the same issue with the storytelling that I did with Sleeper. Despite loving many of the characters, I never felt immersed in the story. Too much of the story was told through the characters’ inner monologues; I felt like I was reading a compilation of diary entries and transcripts of the mc’s every. single. thought and fantasies. instead of a romance story.

➵ Scarlett wasn’t my favorite heroine. Is it possible that my criticism towards her is in part due to my belief that nobody’s good enough for Dylan Brodie? 100% yes. My opinion of her changed for the better once she and Dylan finally got together.

➵ Speaking of Scarlett and Dylan finally getting together—it took way too long. I did not enjoy waiting for almost half of the book for Scarlett to finally stop fighting her attraction to Dylan. In my opinion she should have dismissed him as a patient by the end of their first session when she knew that the “inappropriate” feelings they had towards each other were mutual. Drawing it out just got on my nerves.
