Deacon King Kong by James McBride

5.0

In these trying times this book had a theme of unity and hope. I read it in a few days as it was a pleasant distraction during these times. The main character Deacon King Kong aka Deacon Cuffy is a complex and memorable character. My most favorite character of all though is Sister Paul. I thoroughly enjoyed the intergenerational nature of this book as it characters of various ages , ethnicities, and backgrounds are interact regularly. In fact the setting is the CauseWay Housing Project and that is a character too.

I am reminded why I enjoy reading James McBride and just make go back re-read The Color of Water as some of these characters are based off actual people McBride grew up around when he lived in public housing in Brooklyn.
