Such a Fun Age
by Kiley Reid
Race, coming-of-age, self-reflection, and justice are all brought together in Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, and it is really done well!
I had been putting off reading this book for a really long time. I saw it on several friends' read and TBR lists, but I couldn't get into the hype. And then I read the book and quickly understood why people rave about it.
Reid does an incredible job of writing a book about race disparity, unfair treatment, injustice, and the concept of white savior mindsets. The main characters - a young black woman and her boss as a nanny - are interwoven in the narrative as each character navigates how to act. I was amazed by how each character was captured and well-exemplified. They each had their own voice and psyche that Reid constructed so well.
I enjoyed that this book was on a serious topic but read very much like a Beach Read. It makes the reader think about their own choices and ideas while also giving you something fun to read. If you are looking for a book that touches on serious topics but doesn't make you hate yourself, this is the book for you!
