The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

5.0

I was very worried that this book would be overrated. It wasn’t at ALL. I know there’s people who are upset that the two main characters went about it in an “elementary school way.” I’ve also seen people be upset that he was mean to her instead of just being nice, and that perpetuates the idea of “if he’s mean to you, maybe he likes you!” However, as a feminist, I have to say: I don’t care. It’s a book. Suspend your disbelief or don’t read it, it’s as easy as that! Honestly I loved it and I loved the games they were playing because they were funny. I give very few books a five star rating, but I truly loved this book and would consider rereading it which is HUGE for me because I do NOT reread. I liked the backstory behind the merger, I thought the office culture was funny, and I liked how frustrating the two main characters were sometimes. I just wanted to reach in and shake them and say “JUST SAY WHAT YOU MEAN!!!” But that’s what I liked about it. There was angst, confusion, and frustration. It wasn’t insta-love. I think in order to read most romance novels, you need to be willing to suspend your disbelief. Especially if you’re a feminist and it’s an enemies to lovers because in real life it would be considered quite toxic. But if you’re able to suspend your disbelief and you enjoy enemies to lovers, you’ll love this book.
