This historical fiction novel about nuns in the 1100s is not something I expected to really get into or enjoy very much, but wow, Lauren Groff is talented and she made me like it. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and drew me in despite my fear that I wouldn't connect with these characters and their story. Groff brings a modern and feminist sensibility to her imagining of a real figure from history about whom very little is actually known; the tale she has crafted here is complex and beautiful.
