One of the most enjoyable classics I’ve ever read, this door stopper tome is surprisingly very, very funny as it looks into and at times pokes fun at the many personalities in small town England. The writing is elegant and you can tell Eliot has a deep affection for all her characters—even the unlikable ones like Edward Casaubon. The romance plots turn in some unexpected ways, and a big takeaway is that money complicates things and can bring as much suffering as it alleviates.
