Disappointing to the end. It is actually rather fascinating the way this series deteriorates. The limited universe and character set are fine in a limited setting but soon get out of hand as the scope of the setting expands. The plot jerks about from episode to episode with killing off a favourite character seemingly the major used for doing this. Rather comically one character gets killed only to reappear with a ludicrously improbable story of survival. The universe is confused with magic everywhere and nowhere, an early Medieval economy with cheques and banks. The social setting is weird - hopelessly unequal and hierarchical with almost no servants in sight. Sometimes magic is huge while at other times it's almost trivial. If you can stop a hurricane what's to stop you blowing down a city wall. But the idea doesn't seem to arise. And so it continues to the final volume.
That said this volume's plot is worse than most.
