The first story is great, but John Green’s middle piece ruins the whole book. It killed the vibe so much that I couldn’t even muster any interest in the third story, which isn’t terrible, but I had to skim most of it because I was so over the whole book by then.
“The Jubilee Express” by Maureen Johnson
A-
Really lighthearted and lowkey, but isn’t that the point of the book? I loved the voice. I loved not knowing where the plot was going. So cute and chill. Just what the doctor ordered.
“A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle” by John Green
D
An absolute bomb. Green writes gender and sexuality so offensively and toxically…it would be appalling if it weren’t the status quo, so instead it’s just infuriating. On top of the that, the plot just strings you along waiting to get to the Waffle House only for that to be the tail end of things. And it’s all wrapped up with a romance that has no genuine chemistry whatsoever. Pitiful.
“The Patron Saint of Pigs” by Lauren Myracle
C+
People seem to hate this one the most, but I don’t think it’s terrible. The narrator is a little too dumb and shallow to enjoy (why did Myracle write Addie this way??) and I don’t love how spiritual the story gets by the end, but it could’ve been worse.
