Sour Candy
by Kealan Patrick Burke
I think it was Vonnegut who said "No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of."
Sour Candy certainly does that. Within 30 pages, our main character, Phil Pendleton's life is turned upside down, and things get even worse for him as the book goes on.
There's some impressively gruesome imagery in this book, much of which has to do with that title (which becomes more ominous the further you read). I breezed through this in about 90 minutes. I couldn't put it down.
Highly recommended to folks who want a quick, sharp horror story that will stick in their minds long after they put it back on the shelf.
