Camille Desmoulins and His Wife. Passages from the History of the Dantonists. Translated by Mrs. Cashel Hoey. with a Portrait by Camille Desmoulins, Frances Cashel Hoey, Jules Clarétie

5.0

claretie smoothly and charmingly narrates camille’s life with a refreshing tenderness and familiarity. there’s a clemency towards “that poor camille” that comes off so sweetly! far easier to read than you might expect from a biography written in 1876, and full of incredible anecdotes and sources. also paints a stunning and (to me) new portrait of danton that pulls him out of the gossip about vice and indulgence.
