Sworn to the Shadow God
by Ruby Dixon
I loved the premise, loved the dynamic with Rhagos, and could barely tolerate the FMC. She starts out painfully twee and cringe, and while some of that gets better, she never really grows out of unfathomable stupidity. And it REALLY pains me to say the female lead ruined a book - I am absolutely the one who defends the most hated FMCs. But Max... I get that she's supposed to be too trusting, but there's naive and then there's cartoonish idiocy. Way too often does Max seem to completely forget things she's seen or said or reasons she's made decisions. It gets infuriating. But I pushed through because Rhagos is just that compelling. I wish Ruby would do another book like this, but with the skill she's developed since writing this book.
This book also continues the grand tradition of Dixon sequels making me hate the woman I liked from the first novel. Talk about hypocrisy.
