Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

5.0

“There comes a certain point with a hope or a dream, when you either give it up or give up everything else.”

“The ones who know can't tell us, and the ones who tell us don't know.”

Laini Taylor writes the most beautiful stories I have ever known. She is the Muse of Dreams. The effect she has on me with her words I feel like I’m in some fairy-tale where I’m offering my heart on a plate saying, “take it, take it!” Keep me in dreamer’s world forever.

I didn’t think I’d be able to write a review on this one as how do you collect all these feelings & emotions, then put them into words? Sometimes the only thing to do is tell people to read it for themselves, so you can walk round with your head in the daisies too.

I’m not going into where this book takes off because if your reading this and have not read Strange the Dreamer, I DO NOT want to spoil it for you. You need to feel the magic of these books yourself.

So, let’s talk about the characters that had the most impact for me.

But first, can we all just take a minute to appreciate the journeys these characters go on in terms of personal development. They are all battling a war inside themselves and its written in a way that you cannot help but feel emotional and torn up. We get to see the suffering & PTSD from the catastrophic events that took place over the duration of 2 centuries and the suffering it is still causing these poor tortured souls.

A big love for me in this duology is how Laini writes side characters just as interesting and with as much backstory as the main characters. Really this story could continue into a series with all the ways in which the side characters story could still develop.

Minya – I spent the entire Strange the Dreamer book hating her and at the start of Muse of nightmares I was sure that was to continue. By the end it all made sense. I’m still not the biggest Minya fan and by no means will I be parading in the ‘I LOVE MINYA’ brigade. But I get it, hers is a sad story. I want to take her under my wing give this kid some support! She really is the glue that keeps this whole adventure together and for me, the most important character.

“A piece of my body just fell off” – Had me howling… I can so imagine her saying this! Oh, the little things…

Thyon Nero – He starts off as a privileged, arrogant self-righteous arse. I just KNEW that was going to change and I freakin’ love him. He’s a deeply troubled character with an abusive father so when he and Calixte start a friendship together I’m like YESSS THIS IS WHAT THIS BOY NEEDS. SAVE MY BOY! Then Ruza and Tzara come through and I’m crying tears of joy. And they are not scared of his pretty boy appearance, they put his arrogant attitude to rights. Can we all just take a minute to appreciate the relationships in these books?! Pleaseeeee Laini, please make a book about Thyon and Ruza, I feel like this is only just starting and I need more of these 2 or I’m gonna explode!!!!

Suheyla – I love you, you’re a queen. Don’t you ever forget that.

Kora & Nova - At the very beginning of Muse of Nightmares we meet these 2 sisters, their story is a background into the Gods & Weep. It gives you an understanding how it all came to be and an insight into just how evil Skathis was with the chain of events that lead to his downfall. Although the biggest for me was that we get a backstory of the Wraith!

Lazlo & Sarai - Finally my heart and my soul. My new favourite book-couple. Lazlo takes more of a backseat in this one which is understandable considering everything that's going on. More than anything I miss his dreams! Is it too much to ask for a little Novella just of his sleeping mind, pretty please? & Sarai... So much power and passion. She truly is a beautiful woman inside and out.

“I would have chosen you, if they had let me choose.”
CRY. CRY. CRY. This part made me sob so bad.

In the last 20 pages or so I realised I’d been holding my breath to the point I’d probably soon lose consciousness, and I let out this great sighhhhhhhhh of relief. This was it. This was the end I'd been waiting for and I sure as HELL wasn’t disappointed.
I have tears behind my eyes even now a day later writing this.

These books are to be cherished and hold a very important place in my heart and my bookshelf, I can feel a re-read coming!

“Once upon a time there was a silence that dreamed of becoming a song, and then I found you, and now everything is music.”

Last of all: We know Weeps true name!
