A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green

4.0

Like the previous book, this is more of a thought experiment than a novel. What would happen if....?? As a think piece, it succeeds. There are lots of ideas and opinions that are fascinating. But as a novel, it is less successful— too many long explications, too many places where I was getting bored and starting to skim. Also, where the previous book was about social media and how it affects people, this one is about virtual reality. Maybe because of my age, it’s just not as interesting a topic to me—I mean, going back to Neuromancer, the scary vision of a future dominated by virtual reality has been done before, many times. So all in all, worth reading but less successful than the first book. Three and a half stars rounded up.
