My favourite author is back with a new book so I was quick off to the bookstore to get it. As the Dutch translation is only expected in a couple of months, and I couldn't wait that long, I decided not to waste any time and read it in English.
This time no Harry Hole in the newest Nesbo. We do get another police investigator: Simon Kefas, an older man facing his own worries. The main character however is Sonny Lofthus, son of Abt Lofthus, who was the formar partner of Simon Kefas. Abt Lofthus commited suicide when it was about to come out that he had been bought and was corrupt. This put in motion a whole series of events that drove Sonny on a dark path. He started taking drugs, got his life off the rails and finally got himself into prison. In prison he takes up the role of confessor for his inmates. In this role he learns the truth about the death of his father. Sonny wants revenge! ... but first he needs to get out of prison.
Nesbo succeeds in this story what he has done so many times before in his Harry Hole books; merging several storylines together, adding several plot twist and working up to an exciting finish. As in his best books it is very difficult to guess the exact outcome off all events and to know where Nesbo will lead you. There are some clues, and I did have some assumptions, but in the end Nesbo still succeeded in surprising me.
To do this Nesbo has created some nicely developped characters, Sonny being the best example of this. Although his actions would prove the contrary, Sonny is in fact a nice and intelligent boy, but one who is scarred for life after all he has been through. Nesbo succeeds very well in explaining Sonny's reasons to the reader and in the end I only wanted Sonny to succeed. Another important character is Simon Kefas; also nicely characterized by Nesbo. Besides these, there is a long list of secundary characters so it's important to remain attentive.
I'd say this is a very good book with a lot of action, much violence, and it has been a pleasure to read it. Maybe its not the best Nesbo I've read, but still a very good one. Although the book is branded as a 'stand alone', I still see possibilities to go further with some of the characters from this book. And as has been the case many times before, once I've finished the latest Nesbo, I'm already looking forward to the next one.
