Earthlings - The Beginning by Ray Star
4.0
So this book focuses on a young girl called Peridot and she lives on a farm with her mum, Joe and Ann, their dog Phoenix and their horses Amy and Roland. Their farm is on an island and they don't have any neighbours, they live a very sheltered existence! That is until a young boy called Euan finds his way to the island, and eventually the farm.
This is the day that Peridot's life changes forever. She soon learns that she is magickborn, not the sort of magic from stories and fables, but real magick from the days of old!
This is a great book, and a very interesting plot. I do love a good fantasy book and I'm glad to say that this did not disappoint! Although I have to say its not at all what I expected from the title or blurb, and actually I think thats a good thing because sometimes it can spoil a book by giving too much away. So I think that based on the blurb I had a preconceived idea that the book was about some kind of alien invasion, given it says that humanity is enslaved and there is an uprising on the horizon! But boy was I wrong!
What an amazing twist! I'm not going to go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so all I will say is that whilst there are some free humans like Peridot and her family, many others like Euan and his mother are not and are being held in captivity. Euan manages to escape and get to Peridot's family. As Peridot's powers start to emerge she may be the only one with the power to save humanity, but she needs to learn to control her powers if she is to come to humanities aid.
I love the pace of this book, there are lots of great plot twists, I really like the fact that the storyline is not something I have come across before, and as an avid reader that doesn't happen too often. I really like Ray's writing style and the characters are great, with lots of depth, their personalities shine through, there are some great laugh out loud moments, one in particular in the prologue and all I can say is that's an image that I won't soon forget! :)
And what an ending, talk about cliffhanger! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to seeing how the plot and characters develop in book 2.
