The Key by Kathryn Hughes

3.0

I really liked the Ambergate story. While we spent a good chunk of the book there, I wish it had been entirely devoted to the 1956 story.

It’s my opinion that this could have been a five-star book if the “modern” component had been left out. It’s such a peeve of mine when authors shoehorn romance into an already strong story. It feels like they’re trying to water it down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The romance component cheapened the overall story and undermined the horrors of the lunatic asylum in a rather embarrassing way. In addition, the author needed to be bolder. Everything about this felt watered down. The ending was pretty trite and again, I felt like it spoilt the effect of the story. Sometimes things don’t work out. Sometimes life isn’t fair. Sometimes it is too late.
