Ripple Effect
by Ki Stephens
Hmmm...I wish Goodreads would let me give half the points. Ok, so [b:Spring Tide|63027350|Spring Tide (Coastal University #1)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1667048716l/63027350._SY75_.jpg|98879936] was a 3.5 rating and [b:Fault Line|123816203|Fault Line (Coastal University #2)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1680523646l/123816203._SY75_.jpg|144274372] was a 4 rating. I'm going to give [b:Ripple Effect|198222260|Ripple Effect (Coastal University #3)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1700567516l/198222260._SY75_.jpg|201005237] 3.75-star (but round it up to a 4). Why you may ask? Well, because I love the full circle of the story, and while I loved both Reynolds brothers (Luca and Elio), I still prefer Holden.
Ok, now on to [b:Ripple Effect|198222260|Ripple Effect (Coastal University #3)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1700567516l/198222260._SY75_.jpg|201005237]. Here we have the story of the missing link. The tie that connects all 3 stories, Elio. Elio finally seems to have his life on track. We are 5 years post [b:Spring Tide|63930478|Spring Tide (Coastal University #1)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1670192592l/63930478._SY75_.jpg|98879936] and 1 year post [b:Fault Line|123816203|Fault Line (Coastal University #2)|Ki Stephens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1680523646l/123816203._SY75_.jpg|144274372]. Luca is in the NFL, is married to Harper and has a beautiful little girl. Kaia and Holden have moved to Dayton U, where Kaia is doing her graduate program, and Holden is an NHL player on the local team in the city. Elio has now been left alone at Coastal University. He is an Electrical Engineer, just as his older sister, Taylor, studied. His BFF no longer goes to school with him, and because he is an ex-coke-addict, a year older than most people in his classes, and has a full-time job, he has little time or opportunities to socialize.
Daisy has just recently transferred from Dayton U to Coastal U. She left behind her boyfriend of 3 years to be closer to the ocean and a university that has a better bio marine department. Daisy is a quiet person but also a social butterfly, making friends easily in life. A few weeks after moving to Coastal University, she breaks up with her longtime boyfriend because he cheated on her, and she happens to cross paths with Elio. While Daisy is not looking for a relationship so soon after her break-up, she can always use more friends. So, one day she is hanging out with Elio, getting to know each other better, when Elio passes out. Turns out, he has a heart problem, and the cardiologist wants to run some additional tests on him to determine what is wrong. This will take some time...approx 3 weeks for diagnosis and trial/error with medication. The cardiologist suggests that someone stay with Elio during this time. As he doesn't have family nearby (or the ones that are around have work) and he doesn't want to bother anyone, Daisy volunteers to move in with him and take care of him, despite barely knowing each other.
Hello, that is a red flag if I ever did see one. Can we talk about a potential serial killer? Can we talk about sleeping with a stranger? Can we say that Daisy is too trusting? This time, it worked out for her, but there were other times when it wouldn't be safe.
During the three weeks that they are living together, Daisy and Elio discover each other. She is sunshine and happiness. Someone who loves surfing and had the potential to go professional when she was younger until she had an accident. Now, she is getting back into surfing but out of pure love, not as a career. Financially, she doesn't really need it. However, her parents seemed to be more responsive when Daisy was a professional surfer than they are now. Now, they practically ignore her. Daisy's ex-boyfriend also realized, a little too late, that he made a monumental mistake by cheating on her. He tries to win her back, but when he sees that she has moved on with Elio, he is out for revenge. He discovers some of Elio's dark secrets. Things that Elio has already confessed to Daisy but doesn't air out to many other people (although many of the things people already know). These things include his job as an online content creator for adult fantasies, where you can hire the creator's services to fulfill your fantasies in person if they so desire. Also, Elio's addictive past with drug use and scamming money off of family. Elio also confesses how, or with whom, he started getting into that party scene and why he moved on from it.
Once Elio's health is stable, Daisy moves back to her place and she and Elio decide it is the right moment to pursue their mutual attraction. They start dating, fall in love, and learn to trust each other entirely with their past. Elio and his family become the loving foundation that Daisy needs in her life as her parents and family are very cold and distant from her. She also realizes that the past friendships she had that stemmed from her ex-relationship were fleeting and fickle. She sheds herself of the persona she was before and fully embraces her happier self with Elio and the new friends she made at Coastal.
Elio learns to open up to Daisy. He realizes that he can open his heart and trust himself again to be around his people. His inner circle has always been his family and Kaia. He now realizes that it can include Daisy.
I love this book because we can see the group of Elio as a person. He is no longer the dumb teenage boy who was persuaded into doing drugs and taking advantage of his family. He is now a provider, set on his future path and has his sights set on the future he can give himself, a future that is going to include Daisy.
