ehhhh. the human outsider entering the world of the other thing can work for me in some contexts, but here it just felt like she was leering at and fetishizing the mythical creatures in the new community. which i know is partly the point in a monster romance, but i found myself just wanting more about the town, how the society is structured, etc. there are exceptions, but broadly i've learned that i rarely care much about a human pov in a world where there are all these other interesting creatures and species, especially when it starts with them being a complete outsider/weirded out by it. as someone who is an "other" in some ways, it just makes me feel othered reading it. also, i know i've only read the one book, but for a world with so much variety things still felt very cis/heteronormative - i feel like there was more room to get WEIRD. i think this book will be perfect for the right person, and would serve as a good entry point for monster romance for the right reader - the protagonist is designed to be very millenial relatable, there's a nice "happily ever after with healthy boundaries" ending - but the characters and writing style just didn't do it for me. I do appreciate how it helped me think more about what i'll look for in romance going forward!
