The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston

3.0

3.5 - I found this book to be somewhat hard to get into, but not because of lack of intrigue as is usually the problem for me. Rather, I was put off by a few things:

1. The constant switching between first person narration from the point of view of Morgana, to her husband Cai, and to the third person omniscient, was at times jarring. One does get used to it, but even nearing the end I still found myself distracted by having to guess or figure out who was going to be talking next.

2. An internal problem of my own, perhaps, was that it took me a while to really "get" Morgana, so her actions were for a time incongruous to me. I think I may have had a perception of what she should be like, as non-speaking and wild-willed as she was, so her softer acts felt out of character to me. Eventually, though, I got used to that as well and the rest of the book was fine.

3. The last 100 or so pages seemed to drag on unnecessarily. A trend with all books seems to be that the end rushes by, but this one just felt like it was being unduly slowed. I found myself skimming long passages and felt that it could have been done in half the number of pages

Despite my negative comments, overall I was pleased with the book. I'm curious to read others by the same author.
