I think this was a good end to the series. I generally liked what Aveyard did with her characters in this book and where the plot took them. It was a nice touch to sprinkle in some queerness even if it was a little bit of a sharp turn from the little to no queer representation in the first 3 books. I did have my gripes of course, namely Why did Mare have to go with everyone to the Parley thing.. she didn’t even have a rank or anything and all she brought to the situation was her smart mouth and her trauma 🤨. Why on earth didn’t she get Maven’s brand healed?? Honestly, I hated the brand plot device. I don’t really buy it that Maven would have done that, and I don’t think it added anything at all to the story except for an annoying excuse to talk about Mare’s trauma even more 🙄. And lastly, what happened to the blood healers?? They were mentioned in the first book and then never again as far as I know :/ But I’m able to look past all that because Aveyard still delivered a pretty enjoyable YA story. Her characters were fun, and her battles were exciting. She leaves a lot up to your imagination in the end and usually I hate that, but I actually think it worked out well in this case. It’s far from perfect, but I’d still definitely recommend this series to someone looking for a good YA fantasy story.
