Jamaica Inn
by Daphne du Maurier
Wonderfully atmospheric. I brought my copy of Jamaica Inn at the real Jamaica Inn and the amped-up campiness of the current pub did not prepare me for it's literary namesake. What I always forget about Daphne du Maurier's writing is how uncompromising realistic she is, especially when it comes to representing women's lives and motivations. I have no idea how this works alongside the fabulous language and well-handled dramatic set pieces but it really does and I'm still very much in love.
