This book progressed in opposite fashion than The Alienist — we learn who the culprit is pretty quickly. The rest of the book is spent trying to understand this person’s past and how they came to be the way they are. This structure took a bit out of the suspense and general flow of the plot.
However, the majority of the book is the same fun, speculative adventure as The Alienist. I loved the introspective analysis on gender theories and getting to see more of the characters I love.
