The 8th Circle: A Thriller by Sarah Cain

5.0

This book starts with a bang (literally) when grieving reporter Danny Ryan's friend Michael Cohen crashes his car through Danny's fence, right into his pond, then proceeds to mess up Danny's life further by whispering something cryptic and dying with a bullet in his gut.

Sarah Cain builds up a rich world for Danny to inhabit as he investigates the cryptic clue Michael left him, while trying to come back to life after spending a year mourning his wife and son's deaths in an accident.

Danny delves into the underbelly of the high society of Philadelphia and its Main Line, revisits the violent ghosts of his South Philly childhood, and uncovers some truly terrifying connections on his way to a climax that had my pulse pounding.

I stayed up way too late to finish this book because I couldn't NOT. And then, unlike so many thrillers, it ended really, really well, leaving me sighing as I turned the last page.

Beautiful, terrifying writing. And I may have developed a crush on Danny Ryan...
