The Mermaid of Black Conch
by Monique Roffey
A mermaid comes to a fisherman's boat to hear his music. Over time they build a fragile relationship. One day the boat she approaches is not his, and she is caught by American fishermen looking for the catch of their lives. They intend to sell her off to the highest bidder and make their fortune.
David, the fisherman, rescues her and she gradually transforms back into the woman she was before she was cursed, thousands of years ago. They fall in love, but the magic that cursed her is stronger than anything else, and soon, things begin to go very wrong indeed.
This is a deeply strange book. It's not about pretty mermaids and cutesy stories. It's mythic in its reach and has dark and troubling themes that smash through whatever thoughts you might have about where this book is going. I very much enjoyed it for its oddness and its refusal to be nice and well behaved.
