Conceptually and idea-wise, this book had some great parts. Especially at the latter half of the book. From the beginning I got lured in by the unique type of narrative point of view of our main character (or characters, but that's explained in the book).
Sadly, I think not all of those ideas or concepts the author wanted to put into this book got across very well. There were parts, mainly in the first half, where I actually got bored because I thought the "point" of the story was already established and I felt like everything was dragging on without actually continuing the story. I didn't feel like anything was actually at stake at all, and I didn't feel any particular strong way about anything that was happening. Then some more vague, but interesting and unique, parts of the world and people got introduced, but without enough explanation to actually make them make sense in the whole picture. This did all come together at the end quite nicely, which makes me glad I actually continued instead of giving up at the boring and dragging parts. I think the author at least did very well on wrapping it all up and ending the story in a satisfying way.

All in all, this is a book unlike everything I've ever read, with some great and creepy body horror-- some of which actually made me feel unsettled and feel inspired to paint the scenes in all its detail. (If you like the type of body horror, any horror that has to do with medical institutions set in a "historical but also not really historical sci-fi" setting, I really recommend the movie "A Cure for Welness". )
The most tense parts were quite well written, and I could feel myself being pulled into the story again. But as I said before, most of the interesting bits were put in the second half. And I think that's a shame, for I think most people would give up before that.
