Mystic River
by Dennis Lehane
I avoided reading this when everyone else was, after the movie came out, and am glad I did not have the movie characters stuck in my head when I read. What makes this memorable the sense of inevitability to what ultimately happen; that's more tragic than a gratuitous surprise any day. Lehane's writing is strong but it's also not something that I immediately want to go read more of; that said, I'm sure I'll pick up more of his work eventually.
