I thought that this was an enjoyable debut from this author and I am definitely glad that I gave it a read.
Broken Play is a Childhood Friends to Lovers novel, which for me is usually hit or miss and I am happy to report that this is definitely a hit. Riley Paige really does a good job of showcasing their childhood connection while navigating these newer feelings and the potential risks involved should it not work out.
Jaxson, this MC was my favorite part. He was strong and sweet, he knows what he wants and he will do anything, like transfer colleges in his junior year. He has literally been in love with Maddy since they were kids and everything he does is to prove to her that he is all in. There were moments, however, that my heart broke for him and I just wanted to cuddle him.
Madison, she was a hard character for me to connect with. She had a hard life growing up and because of those past traumas, she doesn't let anyone in and always seems to have one foot out the door. I can understand why she starts the novel the way she does; I was just hoping for growth from her, at least before we actually get it. Her behavior just made me angry on and off after the 50% mark.
That being said, I thought this book was well written. Clearly the emotions emanated off the page. She broke my heart and made me mad, so I count that as a win in the emotional connection box.
I loved Carter and Lyla. I thought they helped provide the needed depth for the MCs.
Overall, this was an enjoyable debut. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series. Cannot wait for Carter and Lyla.
