Intriguing premise and promising start that really lost steam at around the 30-40% mark. No POV for Meryl except for a tiny bit near the end that repeats something from the beginning. Almost no variation among the characters’ voices, making them flat and difficult to distinguish. Very little meaningful character development. Lots of repetitive monologuing. Weird treatment of the only nonbinary character…. to start with, if Tressa Fay is named this literally for hair, what does it say that Mare named her NB character Guy. Also, I get that this is supposed to be magical realism, but between the samey characters and the unrealistically idealized lives they lived, it just felt like listening to someone playing with a toy house full of Barbies.
