Heart Berries
by Terese Marie Mailhot
A book that is a masterclass in affective sentimentality. Mailhot presents the masterful feelings that accompany heartbreak, lovesickness and obsession while wrapping it within a reality of mental illness. The prose is written like poetry at times, and the rootedness in Mailhot's Seabird Island Indigenous cultural perspective is refreshing. I long for the accompanying backstory of the writing itself, but here Mailhot lets it speak for itself. Both brave, and yet, leaves so many more questions to be answered.
