Life After Life
by Kate Atkinson
Even though we are told not to sweat the small stuff, it's that small stuff, those humble decisions, that change (or end) lives. Ursula Todd lives her life over and over again, with dramatically different results, as hunches and happenstance cause her to choose different paths. The Todd family is replete with vivid characters, both inspiring, and repulsive, and the backdrop of life in the English countryside, the London Blitz, and Hitler's Germany ground Atkinson's delightful humor in sobering grit. Life After Life absorbed my attention and caused me to ask myself (and others) the following questions: Should I heed those inner voices warning me to beware of certain choices? and, more specifically, Would I assassinate Hitler in 1930 if I knew what carnage his leadership would cause?
