Mischling by Affinity Konar
5.0
Mischling was a book that took me on a journey I was both very familiar with and new to all at the same time. Having read quite a bit of Holocaust narratives I was familiar with the "Zoo" and the possibilities of what could have/ did occur there. And while the Dr. is mentioned numerous times, those looking for more of an insight in him and his practices should look for a different book.
The story truly centers around the two girls Stasha and Pearl, twins who have been brought to the Zoo and attempt to survive the Dr. while trying to overcome the inevitable stress of their relationship. In my humble option the book should really be summarized as the bond of sisterhood within an extraordinary time period, and have a less focus on the Zoo aspect of it. There were numerous instances where the sisters alliance can be felt pure and true, regardless of the fact that they are twins (or that I do not have one). Unfortunately I did feel that the ending was a bit contrived and rushed. Some parts are simply to unrealistic for me to rationalize and I finished the book in a rush with the desire to just hurry up and get through it.
