Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

2.0

I read the Practical Magic series in chronological order, NOT release order. I’d recommend doing the same.

I’ll admit it, I read this entire series of books because I love the Practical Magic film. That said, I am also the kind of person who is easily able to separate books from their film counterparts and appreciate each for what they are.

Practical Magic is great storytelling, but it is definitely the weakest story in the trilogy. It seems Alice Hoffman better wrote, and became better connected to this story, the more she spent time with it, which is understandable. The palpable magic that exists in the rest of the series is so completely nonexistent here.

The lack of spark in this one had me reading it for the sake of finishing the series and waiting for it to be over. No one should ever have that feeling when reading a book.

Read The Rules of Magic and Magic Lessons instead. They were both far better, more fun reads. Magic Lessons was my favorite of the three, and now one of my favorite books in general.

Two stars for this one for storytelling, so glad this series improved.
