Blood of Elves
by Andrzej Sapkowski
I honestly forgot how good this is. The amount of extensive world-building in these books is astonishing and Sapkowski does it all through character-dialogue. You never see a character give a load of exposition, it all flows naturally through great dialogue scenes.
The world of the Continent deals with invasion, racism, genocide, civil war and Geralt who tries to maintain neutrality through it all.
Sapkowski doesn't explain anything but lets the reader puzzle the story together for itself through clever and succinct dialogue.
If you think these books are just about Geralt, you would be mistaken. He is not even in it that much in this book. He is more of a side character in his own books and the stories evolve subtlely around him. These books have an immense cast of characters and each gets a chance to shine. They are intriguing, have their own aganda and alliances and are very distinct from each other.
I shouldn't forget the prose which is just wonderful.
Also I have read the first two books and these consisted of short stories with little connection between them. But if you read the full books you realize the short stories set up events in a major way in the later books.
The Witcher series rightfully deserves a spot in my top 5 fantasy series of all time.
