A few weeks ago Entangled: Crush added the complete Backstage Pass series to NetGalley and I had to request it right away. Here’s the thing, I love rock star books, I love cute young adult contemporaries and I love Entangled: Crush so why shouldn’t I request it right?? Aimee and the Heartthrob is the first book in the series and while I didn’t love it completely I also didn’t hate it.
This book has one of my favorite tropes, the brother’s best-friend one, and I was really excited to read this book but it ended up being kind of meh. One of my main problems in this book were the characters… I really didn’t like them and they were kind of annoying, especially Aimee. I know she’s only 16 years-old but sometimes she was too immature. I had a lot of problems with her and with some things she did but my biggest problem with her was what she did when she was younger. I understand people who write fanfiction and I also understand when teenagers idealize a life with a celebrity but what Aimee did when she was 14 was kind of creepy and weird as hell. Miles was a little better than Aimee and I really liked him but he also got to my nerves. I hated that he kept treating Aimee like a little kid when they were younger because she was only one year younger that him. I also hated when he looked like a horny pre-teen. If you can’t even see a girl’s shoulders without getting horny you’ll have a lot of problems Miles. Another thing I didn’t like as much is that sometimes he wasn’t that smart and made dumb assumptions. Dear Miles, a girl wearing a ponytail doesn’t mean she didn’t have time to shower… I don’t know if you know this but sometimes girls use ponytails for other reasons. It might seem that I didn’t like this book at all but I quite enjoyed it. I especially liked Aimee and Miles together. They were super cute and they really helped each other with their problems.
Now let’s talk about their problems and my problems with their problems. For me this book would have worked way better if both Aimee and Miles were older. First of all, I don’t but that any responsible parents would make their 16 year-old daughter spend 3 weeks in a tour with a rock band only because her 19 year-old brother was there working. I also don’t buy that a teenage girl (who is not featured in the book) would release a tell-all book were she would talk about all the details of her first time with a teenage rockstar. And I don’t buy that in the weeks Aimee spent on tour her brother and Miles’s mom didn’t try to see how she was doing and what she was doing during her days. There were a few other situations that I think would have worked better if the characters were not teenagers. However, I still couldn’t see these characters as adults because they were too immature sometimes. There was also one situation that I think it would have worked better if it had been way more than two years since Aimee and Miles saw each other.
Overall, this was a quick fun read. While I had a few problems with the book and was frustrated a few times I still think it was an okay read and cute. I just hope book 2 is better because I’m expecting great things from Ryder, the bad boy from the band.
